September 15 - October 10, 2014:
Recently my wife begin applying at several hospitals to begin her residency. At each interview she met all the qualifications and criteria except for one: she was required to take exams and attend lectures and conferences on the Sabbath (Saturday). We love Jesus and Jesus loves the Sabbath so during the interviews my wife told the doctors that she would not participate in these activities on the Sabbath. The doctors informed her that it would not be possible for her to do her residency and keep the Sabbath. DJ was told to "think it over" and "re-consider" her Sabbath commitment so that she could be hired. DJ continued to apply at different hospitals but with the same results. I wished that God would lead our decision so I decided to fast and pray. So for three days October 8-10 I fasted and prayed drinking only water. It was a wonderful experience. On the 3rd day the doctors from the first hospital sent a text to DJ and asked for a final decision if she would "re-consider" her Sabbath commitment. "How should I respond?" DJ asked me. Just then I found a quote from Ellen White: We are not to cringe and beg pardon of the world for telling them the truth: we should scorn concealment. Unfurl your colors to meet the cause of men and angels. Let it be understood that Seventh-day Adventists can make no compromise. In your opinions and faith there must not be the least appearance of waverings: the world has a right to know what to expect of us.--Manuscript 16, 1890 (Evangelism page 179) DJ was encouraged and texted the doctors (in the Philippines texting is preferred to calling) that she would not compromise the Sabbath. (This was the 3rd day of my fast). On October 11 (immediately after I finished my 3 day fast), the doctor called DJ and spoke to her on the phone. This is a summary of the phone call: "Thank you for your response. We have never had a Seventh-day Adventist work in our hospital before. Exams, lectures, and conferences on the Sabbath are required but we respect your decision not to compromise on your beliefs. Therefore we will grant you freedom from these obligations and will schedule your exams for another day of the week. You are accepted into our residency training program and will be expected to begin next week." Praise the Lord! "Those that honor me I will honor" 1 Samuel 2:30 "O how I love your law, it is my meditation every day" Psalm 119:97 "How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" Genesis 39:9 "This kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting" Matthew 17:21 " Men are to know that a fast has been held, not by any formal announcement of it, but by the results of it.” EJ Waggoner, The Present Truth, May 3, 1900 "prayer and fasting always accomplish something" E.M. Bounds here and of course Revelation 14:12 "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."
